Ecommerce Website Development in India: A Practical Guide
Putting your products online is easy. Building a store that Indian customers trust, that works well on a mid-range phone, and that fits how you already run your business takes a little more thought. This guide covers what to decide before you build.

Marketplace or your own online store?
Marketplaces such as Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho give you instant reach, but you pay commissions, compete with everyone else on price, and you do not own the customer relationship. With your own online store you keep the brand, the margin and the customer data — including the phone numbers you need to reach buyers again on WhatsApp.
For most growing businesses the answer is both: use marketplaces to get discovered, and use your own store to build repeat customers.
What an Indian online store must have
- The payments Indians actually use. UPI first, then cards, net banking and wallets through a gateway such as Razorpay or Cashfree, and Cash on Delivery where it makes sense for your product.
- GST-ready invoices. Your GSTIN, HSN codes and correct CGST, SGST or IGST split on every invoice, generated automatically.
- Pincode checks and shipping. Tell customers at once whether you deliver to their pincode and what it costs. Shipping aggregators such as Shiprocket or Delhivery can be connected so labels and tracking are automatic.
- Speed on a mid-range Android phone. Most of your visitors will arrive on a phone over a 4G connection. Small images, few scripts and a simple checkout matter more than fancy animation.
- Trust signals. A real address, phone number and WhatsApp contact, clear return and refund policies, and honest product photos.
- Order tracking and WhatsApp updates. Customers should not have to call you to ask where their order is. See our guide to WhatsApp automation for how order updates work.
- Search and filters. Buyers with a large catalogue need to find things quickly by category, price and size.
- An easy back office. You or your staff should be able to add products, change prices and process orders without calling a developer.
Hosted platform, WordPress or custom-built?
| Option | Best when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted store platform | You sell a standard catalogue and want to launch quickly | Monthly fees, paid add-ons and limits on custom logic |
| WordPress with WooCommerce | You want flexibility and are comfortable maintaining plugins | Plugin conflicts, security updates and slower pages if not tuned |
| Custom-built store | Your selling process is unusual: multiple vendors, party-wise pricing, bulk orders | More effort up front, so start with a small first version |
None of these is universally best. If a standard platform can do what you need, use it. Go custom when your process is what makes your business different — and make sure you own the code, so you are never locked in.
When custom makes sense: a multi-vendor example
YouniformWala is a uniform marketplace we built end to end. It needed a customer storefront, a dashboard for each vendor and an admin control panel, with multi-vendor inventory, order routing, custom pricing and bulk ordering for schools and corporates. A standard theme could not model that, so the platform was built around the workflow. It is live in production, running real orders.
Not every business needs that. Lotus Makhana, a fox-nut brand, needed a premium brand website with a product catalogue and a direct enquiry flow, so we built exactly that and nothing more. If you sell through enquiries and WhatsApp, a catalogue-and-enquiry site can go live sooner than a full shopping cart, and you can add checkout later.
Get found: SEO basics for a new store
- Give every product a unique title and description in plain words your buyers use, not copied from the supplier.
- Keep URLs clean and pages fast. Speed is part of how Google ranks pages, and it decides whether a mobile visitor stays.
- Set up Google Search Console and submit your sitemap so Google finds every page.
- If you also serve local customers, set up a Google Business Profile with the same name, address and phone number as your website.
- Write helpful guides for the questions your buyers ask. That is why we publish this blog for our own business.
A launch checklist
- Place a real test order with UPI on your own phone, then a Cash on Delivery order.
- Check the GST invoice: GSTIN, HSN codes, tax split and totals.
- Publish your privacy policy, terms, shipping policy and return policy.
- Test the site on a mid-range Android phone over mobile data, not just on office Wi-Fi.
- Confirm shipping rates and pincode rules for your main cities and the far ones.
- Connect your WhatsApp number so customers can reach you in one tap.
- Install analytics and Search Console before you promote the store.
- Make sure backups run, and that someone owns the admin login.
How long does it take, and what does it cost?
A catalogue and enquiry website can be live in a couple of weeks. A full store with payments and shipping takes longer, and a multi-vendor platform longer still. Most e-Bharat Solutions projects launch within 2 to 10 weeks, and you see a working proof of concept about two weeks in, before you commit to the full build.
Cost depends on scope, so we do not quote a number before we understand your business. The main drivers are the number of products, payment and shipping integrations, custom features such as vendor dashboards, design and content work, and ongoing support. We give a clear estimate after a free 30-minute discovery call. To see who we are, read about e-Bharat Solutions.
Ecommerce website FAQs
How much does an ecommerce website cost in India?
It depends on what you need. A simple catalogue site costs far less than a store with payments, shipping and GST billing, and a multi-vendor marketplace costs more again. The number of products, integrations and custom features decide the price, which is why we quote after a free discovery call.
Can I offer Cash on Delivery?
Yes, and many Indian buyers expect it. COD orders can be returned undelivered, so a common fix is to confirm each COD order with the customer on WhatsApp before you ship it.
Will my store work on slow mobile networks?
It should. We design for mid-range Android phones and 4G connections: compact images, minimal scripts and a short checkout.
Do I own my online store?
With e-Bharat Solutions, yes. You own the source code, the database and the hosting accounts, and you are never locked in to us.
Can my store send order updates on WhatsApp?
Yes. We can connect your store to the WhatsApp Business Platform so customers receive order confirmations, dispatch updates and delivery messages automatically.
